Did you know… every time you move a standard without addressing the pattern, you teach people that the standard can move again.
Compassion doesn’t mean giving endless chances.
Sometimes the most supportive thing a leader can provide is clarity, ownership, and accountability.

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Stop resetting the clock
A manager says:
“Let’s just give this a little more time.”
A leader says:
“We’ve had this conversation before. I want to be honest that the pattern has continued.”
Then ask:
- Can we review what we previously agreed would change?
- What has happened since then?
Think about a deadline.
If you move it every time you reach it, eventually it stops being a deadline.
The same thing happens with expectations.
2. Find out what keeps getting in the way
A manager says:
“This is your last chance.”
A leader says:
“Before we decide on the next step, I want to understand why the commitment we made hasn’t turned into consistent action.”
Then ask:
- What’s preventing you from following through on what we agreed?
- Is there a system or process that keeps breaking down?
Repeating the warning without diagnosing the breakdown rarely changes the result.
Get curious about why the pattern keeps repeating.
Then address the real problem.
3. Replace another chance with a clear commitment
A manager says:
“I’m willing to give you one more opportunity.”
A leader says:
“Let’s get clear on what must change, what support you need, and how we’ll know whether the commitment has been met.”
Then ask:
- What are you committing to, and by when?
- What support will help you follow through?
- How will we know the commitment has been met?
Compassion isn’t endlessly extending the timeline.
It’s giving someone clarity, support, and ownership before deciding what comes next.
Managers keep giving one more chance.
Leaders turn repeated conversations into clear commitments and accountability.
