The Tip

Remember to…

1. Stop jumping in too fast

A manager says:

“Here's what you should do.”

A leader says:

“Before I jump in, what solutions have you already thought through?”

Then ask:

What options have you considered?
What do you think the next best step is?

The faster you provide answers, the more dependent your team becomes.

The more you coach thinking, the more ownership they build.

2. Stop measuring your leadership by how needed you are

Many leaders tie their value to being the one everyone depends on.

It feels important.

It also creates exhaustion.

A manager says:

“I guess I'll just handle it myself.”

A leader says:

“I want us to build more ownership around this.”

Then ask:

Where could more ownership exist on this team?
What decisions could be handled without me?

Great leadership isn't measured by how much people need you.

It's measured by how much they can accomplish without you.

3. Coach thinking instead of taking over

A manager says:

“Just give it back to me. I'll do it.”

A leader says:

“Walk me through how you're thinking about this.”

Then ask:

What's your reasoning?
What would you do if I wasn't available?

Every time you take work back, you teach people to bring problems upward.

Every time you coach thinking, you build problem solvers.

Leadership scales when people learn how to think, not just what to do.

Managers carry the team until they burn out.

Leaders build people who can carry themselves.
