The Thought

Did you know…one of the biggest sources of missed expectations on teams starts with a phrase that sounds positive:
“I’ll do my best.”

Effort sounds encouraging, but effort without clarity creates confusion.
Leaders don’t just accept effort — they turn effort into commitment.

Quote:

“Vague expectations create consistent disappointment.” – Unknown

The Tip

Remember to…

1. Turn effort into commitment

A manager says:
“Alright, do your best then.”

A leader leans in and clarifies:
“Help me understand what your best looks like.”

Then align on specifics:

  • What does good look like here?
  • What result can we count on?
  • What would make this feel complete to you?

This isn’t being pushy.
It’s being clear.

2. Make the outcome visible

A manager thinks autonomy means saying:
“I trust you.”

But autonomy without a target creates drift.

A leader asks:

  • What outcome should we expect?
  • By when?
  • What will “done” look like specifically?
  • What might get in the way?

Peter Drucker said it best:
“What gets measured gets managed.”

Not by you - by them.

3. Replace hope with follow-up

A manager says:
“Let me know how it goes.”

A leader schedules support.

Follow-up isn’t micromanagement - it’s momentum.

Ask:

  • When should we reconnect?
  • How will we know it’s on track?
  • What barriers might show up along the way?

This simple habit builds trust and prevents surprises later.

Managers accept effort.
Leaders co-create done.
