The Thought
Did you know… “I didn’t have time” usually means something else took priority.
The leadership opportunity isn’t to argue about how many hours are in the day.
It’s to understand the tradeoff and create clarity around what matters most.
Quote:
“What gets scheduled gets done.” – Michael Hyatt

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Don’t argue with the excuse
A manager says:
“We all have the same 24 hours.”
A leader says:
“Walk me through what took priority instead.”
Then ask:
- What did you choose to do instead?
- What made that feel like the higher priority?
Think about a packed suitcase.
If something doesn’t fit, the real question is:
What did you decide was more important to pack?
Get curious about the tradeoff before jumping to blame.
2. Make the tradeoff visible
A manager says:
“You should have made time.”
A leader says:
“If this commitment keeps getting pushed, we need to be clear about what that’s costing the team.”
Then ask:
- What happens to everyone else when this keeps getting pushed back?
- What needs to change so we're aligned on the priority?
Connect the missed commitment to the impact.
Delays. Rework. Missed handoffs. Other people picking up the slack.
Then recalibrate around the priority, deadline, deliverable, and what good looks like.
Clarity turns “I didn’t have time” into a conversation about choices.
3. Stop accepting busy as a plan
A manager says:
“Just make sure you get to it next time.”
A leader says:
“Let’s build a way for you to flag it earlier when something is at risk.”
Then ask:
- What signal or checkpoint can you use when you’re starting to fall behind?
- How can we identify the problem before the deadline?
If your flight is delayed, finding out after it was supposed to take off doesn’t help much.
The same is true with missed commitments.
Build a better decision point before the miss, not just another conversation after it.
Managers argue about whether someone had enough time.
Leaders uncover the tradeoff, make the impact visible, and build a better system moving forward.
