The Thought
Did you know… the biggest risk to a team isn’t change — it’s staying the same when things are no longer working?
Tradition can feel safe, but it can also quietly block progress.
Leaders don’t ignore the past.
They respect it - then evolve it.
Quote:
“The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence — it is to act with yesterday’s logic.” – Peter Drucker

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Respect the history — then challenge inertia
A manager says:
“We’re changing it. That’s it.”
A leader says:
“I respect how we got here - and we need to evolve. Here’s why.”
Then ask:
- What’s working about the current way?
- What’s no longer serving us?
- If we started today, would we design it this way?
Tradition should be context - not a cage.
2. Separate comfort from effectiveness
A manager says:
“It works fine. Let’s keep it.”
A leader reframes:
“Familiar doesn’t always mean optimal.”
Then ask:
- What outcome are we protecting?
- Where are we settling?
- What would better actually look like?
Comfort often hides inefficiency.
Growth requires a little discomfort.
3. Co-create forward movement
A manager imposes change.
A leader builds it with the team.
Say:
“Let’s design a better approach and test it together.”
Then ask:
- What would a pilot version look like?
- What small change can we try?
- How will we measure success?
People support what they help create.
Managers protect the past.
Leaders build the future.
