The Thought
Did you know…most mistakes that start with “I didn’t know” are not knowledge problems — they’re clarity and ownership problems.
Managers argue the past.
Leaders diagnose the gap.
Because when people feel blamed, they hide confusion.
When they feel safe, they reveal it early — and the team wins.
Quote:
“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.” – Brené Brown

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Don’t argue. Investigate the gap.
A manager says:
“You should have known.”
A leader says:
“Help me understand what wasn’t clear.”
Then diagnose it:
- What did you believe the expectation was?
- Where do you think the communication fell apart?
- What would have helped you catch this sooner?
Before blame, find the breakdown.
2. Separate information from ownership
Managers assume:
“I said it, so it’s handled.”
Leaders know:
Information shared does not equal ownership assigned.
Ask:
- What steps did you take to confirm understanding?
- What stopped you from checking back with me?
Then clarify ownership:
“Next time, confirm the expectation in writing.”
“Next time, flag the risk the same day.”
Responsibility starts with clear ownership and commitment.
3. Install a safeguard
A manager says:
“Don’t let it happen again.”
A leader fixes the system.
Ask:
- What confirmation step should we install so this doesn’t happen again?
- How will we know we’re aligned before we execute?
Repeated confusion is usually a systems issue, not a character issue.
Managers argue about the past.
Leaders close the gap for the future.
