Did you know… most leaders address instances when they should be addressing patterns?
One late arrival is a moment.
Repeated lateness is a message.
Leaders don’t react to behavior.
They coach what’s underneath it.

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Call out the pattern, not just the instance
A manager says:
“You’re late again.”
A leader says:
“This is becoming a pattern - not just a one-off.”
Then ask:
“What’s making it hard to be on time consistently?”
Patterns require a different conversation.
2. Connect the behavior to their identity
Rules don’t drive behavior.
Identity does.
A manager says:
“You need to be on time.”
A leader says:
“Reliability is part of how you’re seen here. What reputation do you want to build?”
Then ask:
“What does showing up on time represent to you?”
Identity shapes habits.
Habits shape performance.
3. Set a non-negotiable standard and co-create the solution
A manager says:
“Just fix it.”
A leader says:
“This isn’t flexible - so what needs to change to make this consistent?”
Then co-create:
- What’s your plan starting tomorrow?
- What’s the first adjustment you’ll make?
Standards aren’t what we say.
They’re what we enforce.
