Did you know…burnout is rarely a motivation problem?
More often, it's the result of carrying too much for too long without enough clarity, support, or recovery.

Leaders don't assume people need more motivation.
They identify what's draining their energy.

The Tip

Remember to…

1. Stop treating burnout like a motivation problem

A manager says:

“Come on, we just need to push through.”

A leader says:

“Let's step back. What's feeling heavy or unsustainable right now?”

Then ask:

  • What's taking the most energy?
  • Where does the workload feel unrealistic?
  • What is weighing on you the most right now?

You can't coach energy back into people if you don't understand what's draining it.

 

2. Find the friction, not just the fatigue

Burnout often comes from:

  • Unclear priorities
  • Constant interruptions
  • Work that never feels finished
  • Too many competing demands
  • A manager says:

“We need to manage our time better.”

A leader asks:

“What part of the work feels most chaotic or unclear right now?”

Then explore:

  • Where are we creating unnecessary friction?
  • What's making it hard to focus on what matters most?

Exhaustion grows when people are constantly reacting instead of progressing.

 

3. Reduce pressure by creating clarity

A manager says:

“Everything is important.”

A leader says:

“If we had to narrow our focus, what are the top priorities right now?”

Then ask:

  • What can we simplify?
  • What can we deprioritize?
  • What would create the biggest relief?

Sometimes the most productive thing a leader can do is remove pressure, not add more.

Managers push harder.

Leaders create clarity.
