The Thought

Did you know… repeated behavior isn’t a misunderstanding - it’s a pattern?
And patterns don’t change with reminders.
They change with clarity, standards, and consequences.

Leaders don’t treat it like a one-off mistake.
They address it like a repeated choice.

Quote:
“What you tolerate, you teach.” – Unknown

The Tip

Remember to…

1. Call out the pattern, not the moment

A manager says:
“You’re doing this again.”

A leader says:
“We’ve talked about this before, and I’m seeing the same pattern continue.”

Then ask:

  • “What’s making this hard to follow through on?”
  • “What’s really going on here?”

Patterns reveal priorities.
Get to the root - not just the reaction.

2. Re-anchor the boundary as a standard

A manager says:
“I told you not to do that.”

A leader says:
“This isn’t a preference - it’s a standard we’ve agreed to.”

Then clarify:

  • “What does meeting this standard look like every time?”
  • “Are we aligned that this is non-negotiable?”

Standards remove confusion.
Clarity creates accountability.

3. Shift from reminders to consequence awareness

A manager repeats:
“I’ve already told you this.”

A leader is direct:
“If this continues, it impacts trust and the level of responsibility I can give you.”

Then ask:

  • “What happens if this pattern doesn’t change?”
  • “How do you see this affecting your role here?”

At this point, it’s not about reminders.
It’s about choices and consequences.

Managers repeat themselves.
Leaders raise the standard — and hold the line.
