The Thought
Did you know…most urgency problems aren't motivation problems?
They're awareness problems.
People rarely move faster because they're pressured.
They move faster when they understand:
- Why it matters
- Who it affects
- What happens if it doesn't get done
Leaders don't create panic.
They create clarity.
Quote:
“People are more committed when they understand the why behind the work.” – Simon Sinek

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Make the impact of delay visible
A manager says:
“Why is this taking so long?”
A leader says:
“Let's talk about what happens when this gets delayed.”
Then ask:
- Who gets impacted when this moves slowly?
- What chain reaction does this create?
- What results are being delayed because of this?
Urgency grows when people understand consequences—not punishment.
2. Separate calmness from passivity
Some people think being easy-going means moving slowly.
It doesn't.
A manager says:
“You need to care more.”
A leader says:
“There's a difference between staying calm and moving with purpose.”
Then ask:
- What's causing the hesitation?
- Where would faster action make the biggest difference?
- What's preventing you from taking the next step?
Urgency isn't about stress.
It's about responsiveness.
3. Create shorter feedback loops
A manager waits until something fails.
A leader creates checkpoints before problems escalate.
Ask:
- What checkpoint would help keep this moving?
- Where should we reconnect sooner?
- How will we know we're on track?
Feedback works best when it happens close to the action.
As Kim Scott says:
“Feedback should be like brushing your teeth—not waiting for the root canal.”
Managers pressure people to move faster.
Leaders create systems that help people move sooner.
