The Thought
Did you know… accountability breaks down most often after standards quietly drift?
When leaders avoid early conversations, patterns form. And once patterns form, frustration grows on both sides.
Leaders don’t pretend nothing happened.
They reset expectations with ownership, clarity, and care.

“Awareness always comes before change.” – Unknown

The Tip
Remember to…
1. Share the impact - then confirm awareness
A manager reacts late:
“This has been a problem for a while.”
A leader owns the drift:
“I’ve let some things slide. That’s on me. And I want to talk about how this is affecting the team and our work.”
Then ask:
“Were you aware of the impact this has been having?”
People can’t own what they don’t fully see.
Impact creates clarity without blame.
2. Invite them into the solution - don’t put them in the spotlight
A manager dictates:
“Here’s exactly what needs to change.”
A leader collaborates:
“Now that we’re aligned on the impact, let’s figure out what needs to change moving forward.”
Then ask:
“What do you think would prevent this from continuing to happen?”
Ownership sticks when people help shape the solution.
We build with our people - not for them.
3. Reset expectations and co-create the follow-up
A manager warns:
“I’ll be checking up on this.”
A leader aligns:
“Let’s get clear on the expectation, the first step, and how I can support you.”
Follow-up shouldn’t feel like surveillance.
It should feel like support.
Ask:
“What’s the first action you’re willing to take?”
“How can I do a better job supporting you as we move forward?”
Managers enforce accountability after frustration builds.
Leaders reset expectations, share responsibility, and turn accountability into ownership.
