How to handle someone who doesn’t care like a leader, not a manager

Did you know… people rarely “stop caring” for no reason?
Disengagement is usually a signal — of burnout, misalignment, feeling unseen, or a disconnect from purpose.

Managers try to force care.
Leaders work to understand what’s missing — and create clarity about what’s required.

The Tip

Remember to…

1. Stop trying to motivate - start getting curious

A manager judges:
“You need to care more.”

A leader observes and invites honesty:
“I’ve noticed you seem checked out lately. I want to understand what’s behind that.”

Then ask:
“What part of this role feels draining or pointless right now?”

Pressure doesn’t create care.
Understanding often does.

 

2. Be clear about what the role requires

This isn’t emotional - it’s professional.

A manager threatens:
“If you don’t care, maybe this role isn’t for you.”

A leader clarifies:
“You don’t have to love everything about this job - but this role does require commitment.”

Then ask directly:
“Are you willing to commit to what this role requires right now?”

Clarity removes confusion.
And confusion is often mistaken for disengagement.

 

3. Give a choice - not guilt or threats

A manager uses pressure:
“Figure it out, or else.”

A leader creates honest options:
“We can work together to reconnect you to what matters here — or we can talk about what’s next.”

Then pause and let them choose:
“Which direction do you want to take?”

Clarity creates movement.
Even if the answer isn’t the one you hoped for.

Managers try to guilt people into caring.
Leaders clarify expectations - and let people decide how they’ll respond.
