How to run a 1:1 like a leader, not a manager

It’s Tactical Tuesday!

Here is the Thought, Tip, and Tool of the week...

The Thought

Did you know... Studies show that employees who have regular 1:1 meetings with their manager are 3 times more likely to be engaged and feel empowered.

Great 1:1s aren’t just about task updates—they’re about connection and growth. A leader’s ability to connect emotionally and guide through questions is what drives higher performance.

The Tip

Remember to…Ditch the strict agenda sometimes. While it’s important to cover updates, try stepping back from the business talk every now and then. Focus on growth and personal connection. Here are some powerful questions you can ask to foster deeper conversations:

  • “What’s one thing you’ve learned recently that surprised you?”

  • “What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced this week, and how did you approach it?”

  • “Is there something you're passionate about that we haven’t talked about in your role yet?”

  • “What’s something I can do to help you feel more empowered in your role?”

  • “What part of your work makes you feel the most fulfilled, and how can we do more of that?”

These questions not only show genuine interest but also encourage self-reflection and ownership. By creating a space where they feel comfortable discussing challenges, growth, and aspirations, you foster a culture of trust and empowerment that leads to a stronger, more engaged team.
